Based on my gameplay I have found that if the bassinet is blue the baby will be a boy and if the bassinet is pink the baby will be a girl, this only works if you choose that colour before making the baby.

It's only a theory based on my gameplay... when a girl initiates, baby boy is born; boy initiates, then baby girl.
